AFE My understanding of this term is that it refers to an IC that possesses an 'analogue front-end' — i.e. it accepts an analogue input directly (and may process it in the analogue domain) prior to internally converting it to digital.

It's important to note that these are not "analogue ICs located at the front-end", but very much digital ICs that nevertheless have a front end that is analogue. The EN word order and term are quite unambiguous, as confirmed by the acronym used.

neutral Tony M : Grave doubts; there are few enough 'Net refs., and all seem to be translations (some of obviously dubious quality); more importantly, doesn't seem to fit with the technical logic of the device.

This very useful-looking EN > FR glossary does contain the term, though unfortunately I think the translation give is only applicable in a much more specific context than here. However, I cite the glossary anyway, as it looks as if it could be really useful.
