Discussion

Charles Ek Feb 8, 2012:
Living in a place densely populated with roads bearing the name "XXX Rod Road", I understand entirely the "chainage" reference. :-)
Diarmuid Kennan (asker) Feb 8, 2012:
'linear metres' or 'chainage' Just heard back from client - 'linear metres' or 'chainage'
jeffrey engberg Feb 8, 2012:
lineal versus linear I agree
Charles Ek Feb 8, 2012:
Indeed. If we kick the can farther down the road by adding "road OR highway" to that search, it becomes even clearer: http://tinyurl.com/6uct9sq. "Lineal" is correctly used when speaking of ancestry and genetics. Its use when speaking of measuring distances is common but not preferred by most authorities I've checked for this.
