German term

Schifferlgewebe

German to English Tech/Engineering Textiles / Clothing / Fashion Hand stamp raw materials
The term appears as part of a list of raw materials hand stamps. The dialect is Upper Austrian. Target audience is potential suppliers of such materials to the stamp manufacturer. The context is:

...
• Textilien (Gewebe, Vlies, Nadelfilz)
• Schlauchbänder (Nadel- und Schifferlgewebe)
• Selbstklebefolien und Selbstklebe-Stanzteile doppelseitig
...

My current best guess is that it involves a particular type of weave for material used in hose straps. Any ideas?
Proposed translations (English)

Discussion

inkweaver Jan 4, 2012:
Nicole Schnell Jan 4, 2012:
Is it possible that they simply distinguish between sewn hose straps and hose straps that are woven in one piece (tube)?
Lothar Beyer Jan 3, 2012:
A "Nadelgewebe" is a textile produced with needles, e.g. knitting
philgoddard Jan 3, 2012:
That would make sense. What do you make of Nadelgewebe?
Lothar Beyer Jan 3, 2012:
In German "shuttle" would be "Schütze" or "Webschütze". If you are a hand weaver you would use the term "Schiffchen" or "Schifferl" instead. So a "Schifferlgewebe" is a handwoven textile
Horst Huber (X) Jan 3, 2012:
Is there such a fabric that would not be woven by using a shuttle? ("Schifferl", this word formation is common in Austrian or Bavarian).

shaft woven

I am really just guessing here but I think this might refer to needle woven vs. shaft woven fabrics.
