intraoperative examination (IE)

Here are an example:

"...with primary breast cancer who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy, an intraoperative examination (IE) was obtained in..."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15525830

I don't think the abbreviation "IE" is very common. It may be best to use the full term.

neutral Joseph Tein : How about IOE for "intraoperative examination"?

Good point. Although I think it would still be a good idea to use the full term (at least the first time it's mentioned) to avoid any possible confusion with any other medical uses of this abbreviation, such as "intraoperative echocardiography (IOE)".

intraoperative frozen section biopsy

I agree with the previous posts, but this could be another possibility .It is an intraoperative examination of a sample (usually taken from a lesion that is suspected to be malignant) that is processed (frozen and dyed) and later seen by a pathologist while the patient is still undergoing a surgery. In fact, the result of the surgery sometimes depends on the pathologist´s report!
We also call it "biopsia extemporánea" in Spanish.

perioperative study

Intraoperative works as well. I'd stay away from anything more specific as the text in question does not indicate they testing method used.
