The liposome is a droplet consisting of lipid ***bimolecular leaflets*** and can mediate entry of the gene of interest through the plasma membrane. The lipid may be natural phospholipids predominating in lecithin (phosphatidylcholine, PC) and derived from egg yolk and soy bean; may also be synthetic phospholipids, such as dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE), distearoyl phosphatidylcholine (DSPC), and so on; and may also comprise cholesterol. The preferred liposome is cationic liposome, which mainly results from mixing the positively charged lipids and the auxiliary neutral lipids at equivalent molars A complex can be effectively formed between the positively charged liposome and the negatively charged DNA, and transferred into cells through endocytosis.

Липосомы — самопроизвольно образующиеся в смесях фосфолипидов с водой замкнутые пузырьки. Их стенка состоит из одного или нескольких бислоёв фосфолипидов (слоёв толщиной в две молекулы), в которые могут быть встроены другие вещества (например, белки). Внутри липосом содержится вода или раствор.

Диаметр липосом варьирует от 20 нм (моноламеллярные везикулы, стенка состоит из одного бислоя) до 10-50 мкм (мультиламеллярные везикулы, стенка состоит из десятков или сотен бислоёв).
