Spanish term

pasivos por avales y garantias

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) Guarantees, Balance Sheet descriptions
Hello! Can anybody please kindly help me out with this tricky translation bit? I am actually translating from Italian into English, but the original text includes some phrases in Spanish. It's about guarantee granting and how the details are featured in balance sheets. My guess here is either "DEBTS from guarantees issued" (but doesn't sound right to me) or "LIABILITIES FOR GUARANTEES AND COLLATERAL".

The complete sentence reads:
For the purposes of account representation according to IAS principles, the current value of receivable commissions is to be entered in the balance sheet under both assets (entry: deudores varios, i.e. receivables: unpaid fees) and liabilities (entry: pasivos por avales y garantias, i.e. liabilities for guarantess and collateral) of the financial statement.

The Italian author is familiar with the technical language used in balance sheets but said that this was specific to the Spanish system and couldn't find anything quite similar in English.

Grateful in advance for any suggestions! Monica

Best not to use "security" here as you'll be using "securities" for "valores" elsewhere I imagine...

agree TechLawDC : Alternative which I personally prefer for obvious linguistic reasons: liabilities for sureties and guaranties.

lol, many thanks! ;-)
neutral FVS (X) : No, sorry, garantias are neither sureties nor guarantees. This is a false friend.// I repeat garantia/s is NOT surety/sureties

contingent liabilities in respect of guarantees

'Avales' and 'garantias' are both translated as 'guarantees' in English. They are off balance sheet or contingent liablities.

liabilities for guarantees and security

garantia is NOT a guarantee, it is security
aval=guarantee.

You are welcome. Shame you chose a wrong answer.

Thank you, FVS, for your contribution!
Peer comment(s):

disagree Peter Riccomini : 'Garantía' can ceratinly be guarantee. 'Security' doesn't make sense here, paired with 'avales'.
