French term

menu traiteur

French to English Marketing Marketing
Menu traiteur is one of two options in a brochure as opposed to "special wedding menu".

Thanks in advance!

@ BAmary If you do ask the client... please let us know the response. Thank you! ;-)
writeaway Jun 7, 2011:
I stick with what I said client should be asked. it could be so many things.
Tony M Jun 7, 2011:
I agree with W/A, but... ...in point of fact, it is quite likely to be all those things — so I doubt the client will be able to give a much more specific answer; hence why I think the best solution is probably to keep it as general and all-embracing as the original.

The key issue, not explained in our context here, is possibly just why this distinction is being made? In particular, is there just one specific 'menu traiteur', or is this simply an umbrella term in order to make the opposition with the 'special wedding menu' (again, is there just one of those, or si this in general terms?)
writeaway Jun 7, 2011:
ask the client it could be dishes served buffet style (as opposed to a sit-down dinner) or any number of other possibilities. Imo you should ask the client to be sure what they mean here. That will avoid guessing and being wrong.

Note from asker:
More context: I forgot to say the brochure is for a hotel. They offer two kinds of menus for special events: special wedding menu and "menu traiteur"
Peer comment(s):

neutral Yvonne Gallagher : need more context but standard (as opposed to à la carte) could be right

agree Tony M : I'd be inclined to say 'standard function menu', or indeed, 'standard catering menu', incorporating CC's idea too.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "The client said that standard menu was the best option cf to the special menu. We added "catering" as suggested by Tony and CC, but David was the first one to suggest "standard" so the points go to him :-) Thanks everyone! This one was a tricky one!"

cold buffets
Peer comment(s):

agree Sheila Wilson : I think "cold buffet" would be the wedding term. I can't see them offering guests a boxed lunch

Thank you Sheila ! agree with buffet
disagree Tony M : Certainly not a boxed lunch, might not even be lunch at all, and by no means certain that it is cold either.

neutral writeaway : however did cold lunches come up? traiteurs serve hot and cold food.......

neutral rkillings : Yes, but the special wedding menu is also a catering menu -- just a special one.

neutral Tony M : Like RK, I think more distinction is needed here; I think David's idea of 'standard' could be added to your 'catering', so we differentiate between 'special wedding' and 'standard catering/function' menus

(standard) function menu

Keeping it as general as possible...

Just taking the ideas suggested by others and running with them...

I think 'standard' is a good idea to differentiate from 'special', but does omit the idea of 'traiteur' (as distinct from the restaurant menu, for example) — and while 'catering' is certainly one way to go, in the business we often use the rather classier word 'function', which covers a multitude of sins. And cf. things like 'function room / suite' etc.

conference and banqueting menu

I would translate this as a conference and banqueting menu, which is how I have known this to be called in all the hotels in which I have worked. There have always been two distinct menu packs (and likewise, promotional literature) - the one aimed at wedding parties and the other aimed at all types of conference, meeting, team building, product launch, private dining functions etc. that were held in the hotel.

The department within a hotel that deals with functions is known as "conference and banqueting", and this would be their standard menu, or a range of menus from which the organiser can choose.
