Think I'll go for this, as it sounds a bit unusual for a menu (otherwise, if they're tips why not just say pointes d'asperges?). Tender shoots might be another option, but shoots and spears do tend to suggest the whole stalk to me (cf similar Google images for both), whereas I think they mean just the very tip of the tip, so to speak - as seems to be shown in writeaway's link. Thanks!

neutral  Tony M: I'm not so sure! This is a bit more specific, see discussion entry by W/A / No, 'shoots' means young, just starting, whereas in the specific context of asparagus, 'tips' has another meaning, i.e. just the top extremities of grown stems.

  -> maybe you're right. I suppose a photo of the dish would clear up any doubts-but doesn't tips or buds translate more precisely than shoots? Don't shoots sound 'longer' than tips, if you get my drift... I see, in that case only the chef knows which it is.
