Using Correct Techniques
Athletes involved in collision sports-in particular, American football and rugby, which involve tackling an opponent-must be taught and required to use techniques that reduce the likelihood of cervical injury. The head, especially one in a helmet, should not be used as a weapon. Football helmets do not protect players against neck injury. In the illegal spearing maneuver, the athlete uses the helmet as a weapon by striking the opponent with its top. Most serious cervical injuries in football result from axial loading while spearing.
