Ask the client what it means. If you don't receive a reply, leave it as it is (possibly highlighting it in some color and providing a note in your email). As George says, avoid guessing.

I would take the liberty of guessing and putting it "crime scene investigation", if I could be relatively certain that BPU is a generally used acronym with that meaning. I thought it would be a good thing to ask here in case someone had come across it in their work. But since it does not appear to be in general use in that meaning, it must be a home-made abbreviation, as George suggested. And in that case it would be better not to chance it.

Never mind writing notes to the client. My experience is that they
are often ignored. I would write "Permission for Crime Site Investigation"
and be done with it, annoying as impromptu abbreviations are,
our job is to make the text readable in another language.

As far as I know, BPU is valid for many cars, including BMW, VW, etc.
This is only a guess. I also agree with George that BPU needs no translation. Let the sleeping dog lie!

More or less home-made abbreviations in text for translation are annoying. If I can't find them in general glossaries I leave them as they are, with a note to the client.

Thank you for your suggestion. But Basic Power Upgrade doesn't seem very relevant in this context - they are reporting a stolen vehicle and the owner wants to be contacted in case the vehicle is found. The car is a BMW, if this is of any importance.
