Has many meanings: so-and-so, such-and-such, whats-her-name, what's-his-name, etc.. Explanation: Being word that has an "indefinite" or "unspecified" nuance in a dialect, it needs to be translated in a very colloquial way. It has many meanings depending on the situation: Such as whatchamacallit, what’s its name, what's his name, what's her name, so-and-so, such-and-such, etc. depending on the noun that follows it. Like in cinefil's example of xx寺院 =(the) so-and-so temple, (the) such-and-such temple. なんちゃら会社の社員だ。= He's the employee for "some" company Or, in this sense: なんちゃら、たいしたことはない。There, there. It's nothing serious. I used to say なんちゃらほい years ago. It has a kind of comical sound to it so I liked using it. :-P I love the Osaka dialect. |
