French term or phrase: animaux de production
I have already translated "animaux de rente" as "livestock." Is "animaux de production" the same thing? I know the meaning but not the best translation...is it as simple as "production animals"?

Commodity animals can also produce non-food items (e.g.:hide, fur).

This sentence shows that ''draught animal'' is different from ''commodity animal'':

It could be disputed that even at this much higher asset-intensity, the numbers
of assets represented in Table 2 are still quite poor in absolute terms, that is, 2.7
draught animals and five COMMODITY ANIMALS per Tibetan household.

Same distinction in the following sentence:

Draught Animals and Commodity Animals

http://www.stats-fj.gov.cn/tongjinianjian/dz09/en/html/0621....

Knowing, as I do, that pigs are very smart animals, and how horribly mistreated the vast majority of commercially raised animals are, I cannot feel right buying even a morsel of the treats available on Clement Street. Surely these inexpensive snacks are made using the cheapest of COMMODITY animals.

Utilisation de cette espèce par l’homme : loisirs (chasse, observation), animal de travail
(traction, monte), animal de production (VIANDE, LAIT, CUIR...).

Best answer, but I chose production animals as a more common term, but yours is the only response that makes the distinction. Thanks.

neutral  writeaway: why not production animals? it's a term used in English too and is apparently far more widespread than "commodity animals". KIS

same thing

Explanation:
Here (http://lipietz.net/spip.php?article892) animaux de rente and animaux de production appear to be the same thing (opposed to animaux de compagnie).

Notes to answerer
Asker: from Wikipedia artictle "cull" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cull) Criteria for culling livestock and production animals can be based on population or production (milk or egg). Definitely correct on this point.
