Swedish term

koddosa

Swedish to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) Security and Privacy
It is one of those little calculator-looking things used to generate codes in order to gain access to your accounts and private information over the internet. Can't think of a good English word for it.

Discussion

Ingemar Kinnmark Jun 10, 2010:
I am glad you liked "authenticator", Paul. The only reason I knew about this industry term (used by the people who actually make them) is that I have been tracking the stock VASCO Data Security International, Inc. (NASDAQ:VDSI) for a couple of years and they specialize to almost 100% on "authenticators" and related software technology.
David Siebert Jun 8, 2010:
Code generator Actually Paul, I think you hit the nail on the head. I had thought of using code generator, 'cos, er, that's what it does. :-)
Paul Lambert (asker) Jun 8, 2010:
My bank does as well, but not every bank issues that kind. Some are just code generators into which one cannot put a card.
Christopher Schröder Jun 8, 2010:
my bank just calls it a "card reader" (you put your card in and it gives you a code)

English reference (please see the picture in the link below):

The RSA SecurID 700 authenticator is the most popular form factor in the
SecurID authenticator portfolio offered by RSA, the Security Division of EMC,
due to its convenience, reliability and security. Thousands of organizations
worldwide rely upon the SecurID 700 to protect valuable network and customer
resources. When used with VeriSign® Identity Protection (VIP), the SecurID 700
adds an additional layer of security by requiring users to identify themselves with
two unique factors – something they know, a password, and something they have,
a unique one-time password (OTP) that changes every 60-seconds – before they
are granted access to the VIP-secured application.key benefits

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Great link. I will go with this answer. The other answers were good too and would be appropriate in certain context. This time, I think "authenticator" fits best."

Card reader

I have to insert my bank card into mine and it produces a code.
My bank call it a card reader.

token

Depends a bit on the exact type of gqdget. in my previous job, we all had our own SecurID "token" (see ref) for accessing the company network. They were small enough to fit on a keyring, and automatically showed a new password (actually an 8-digit number) every minute. RSA calls them tokens.

However, like Ciarán Rooney, my bank calls their device a card reader.

security authenticator

Swedbank calls these things a security authenticator.
Can't say it rolls off the tongue as well as the Swedish term however!

see the first link below, page 10 for a picture of the Swedbank device
