English term

second through the fourth

English to Spanish Tech/Engineering Mathematics & Statistics
Context:
There is an optional argument that allows for the definition of the positional indicator to
multiple places (i.e. "take the second through the fourth pieces" would be indicated by
replacing the positional indicator with "2,4").

"de la segunda a la cuarta, incluida la tercera"
o
"únicamente segunda y cuarta"

It's a bit tricky. Is it the third included? or is it just talking about the second and the fourth?

What do you think? Thanks in advance.

Discussion

Nelson Aguillon May 4, 2010:
En este caso, "through" significa que la tercera está incluída.

la segunda hasta la cuarta

Incluye también la tercera.
Es lo mismo que decir desde la segunda hasta la cuarta.

Caso contrario, diría sencillamente "la segunda y la cuarta".

segunda, tercera y cuarta

(prep.)
From the beginning to the end of; to the end or conclusion of; as, through life; through the year.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary

Si fuera solo la segunda y cuarta, diría "second and fourth pieces."
