Describing specific paintings, I believe of an early Impressionist: "Esta vistosa escalinata que integra una elegante balaustrada y un gran capitel corintio está explicada, del mismo modo que el adoquinado del suelo, por las reservas del papel, acordadas con algunos traslúcidos lavados grises ..."
set out, marked by the RESERVES? or the blank areas? or white? where the paper is left untouched? Needless to say didn't get a copy of the painting...

"reserved" is in fact used, but for clarity these are often simply described as "unpainted areas"

maybe if you put the name of the painter and of the work into Google images a picture will come up
