Thanks, Jane
neutral Peter Bagney : nothing to do with fights, tiffs, or any such

How can you tell?
neutral Susana Galilea : if the story had to do with a fight, it would be coincidental..."batallitas" are indeed the elaborate stories that grandparents tell about the old times ("contar batallitas" es una expresión figurada, no conviene tomarla literalmente)

Stories about the past

El diccionario Collins da:

contario batallitas- to go over the past times..

old timer stories; old timer tales

At least in Spain, this expression has nothing to do with literal fights. It is typical for grandparents to wax creative when reminiscing about the old times, and go on at length about their experiences. Usually the family will have already heard the anecdote countless times, so the typical reaction from the family might be: "Ya está otra vez el abuelo con sus batallitas!"

Peer comment(s):

neutral Refugio : The only problem with the expression 'old-timer' in this context is that it usually refers to men, not women, and presumably both grandparents are telling these tales.
