In their work on collisions between atomic systems in the thirties, Massey and Mohr obtained a simple, widely used, formula describing the scattering of atoms by atoms at thermal energies. Some thirty years later Massey with R. B. Bernstein, Dalgarno and Percival applied the formal theory of scattering to the problem of rotational excitation and elastic scattering of homonuclear diatomic molecules by atoms.
