French term

baie endiguée

French to English Science Environment & Ecology
"Un suivi de l’utilisation des baies endiguées du réservoir de La Grande 1 par la sauvagine a été effectué en 2009.
L’endiguement de deux baies (BE-05 et BE-07) fait partie des mesures d’atténuation attribuées à cet ouvrage hydroélectrique.
La description de l’utilisation des baies endiguées par la sauvagine et sa comparaison avec celle de six baies non endiguées du réservoir de La Grande 1, constituent l’un des principaux objectifs de ce suivi."

Good source!
Desdemone (X) Jan 20, 2010:
Hydro-Quebec also describes the bays in question as follows:
'A bay was closed of with dikes and enhanced
through the development of waterfowl
nesting areas, spawning grounds, a fish
pass and shelters for small wildlife

Thank you, Lionel_M!
neutral Sheila Wilson : I really wouldn't consider using "dammed bay" - it sounds ridiculous // because "damned" (identical pronunciation) is a swearword (albeit rather tame nowadays) e.g. "these damned flies!"

protected bay

I think I would first call it a "bay protected by dykes" then shorted that to "protected bay".

I actually live in a "village endigué" and I haven't found a neat way to describe it to other English speakers. I always refer to it as a "village surrounded by dykes" Embankments would be an alternative but I prefer dykes.

neutral Adsion Liu : if we build a dam in the bay, as everyone knows especially in sense of environment protection, it's not only and seldome to "protect" the bay. Sorry for expressing my doubt. What we need is to put an objective translation but not subjective/personal one..

I totally agree on the need for objective translations - it was only an afterthought about my own situation causing me similar problems.
