The grand dictionnaire terminologique defines "appoint" as "Dispositif, système, équipement, etc., qui s'ajoute à un élément principal pour fournir un apport supplémentaire ou pour prendre la relève au moment opportun."
That would seem to suggest auxiliary or back-up equipment. In the same GDT, "chauffage d'appoint" = auxiliary system or back-up heating.
