variante (Ogliastro-Sapri variante) Ogliastro-Sapri branch line Explanation: I need more information. You could say turnout but this is when a train is "deviated". I think this is about a separate section |

variante (Ogliastro-Sapri variante) Ogliastro-Sapri bypass Explanation: See this text here; I think it is talking about a bypass as it uses the words "variante di tracciato", a variation on the line, which I imagine is a second line or bypass http://banchedati.camera.it/sindacatoispettivo_16/showXhtml.... |

variante (Ogliastro-Sapri variante) new line/route (new Ogliastro-Sapri line/route) Explanation: As a tunnel specialist, I've been translating these "varianti" for years. This is the new line or new route in the sense of one which replaces the old line. Obviously if the old line went through the town and the new one goes round, the new one is a by-pass, but railways don't by-pass towns. From my database of old translations Autostrada A1 - Bologna - Firenze – Variante di Valico A1 Motorway - Bologna - Florence – New route across the Apennines Il progetto di variante della linea ferroviaria a semplice binario Sibari - Cosenza, tra le stazioni di S. Marco Roggiano e Mongrassano - Cervicati, prevedeva la realizzazione di quattro gallerie The project to construct a new route for the single track Sibari-Cosenza railway line, between the S. Marco Roggiano and Mongrassano – Cervicati stations required the construction of four 10 m. diameter tunnels -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2009-08-05 07:15:20 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I definitely wouldn't use "by-pass" here for the reasons given, even if by-pass is fine in the UK (I have fond memories of the Doncaster by-pass). New routes to replace old "accidentata" lines are often completely new alternative routes which do not "go round" the difficult part, but are often far from it. |
