Unsaturated fatty acids are also named according to the position of the unsaturation (double bound) in the molecule:
- omega-9 is used for monounsaturated fatty acids
- omega-3 and omega-6 are used for polyunsaturated fatty acids
These positions are designated by the number of the involved carbon closest to the methyl carbon, which is called the omega carbon (ω). For example, omega-6 18:2 (linoleic acid) indicates a 18 carbons chain with 2 double bounds and with the first double bound in the 6th position from the -CH3 end. Omega-3 18:3 (alpha-linolenic acid) indicates an 18 carbons chain with 3 double bounds with the first double bound at the 3rd position from the -CH3 end (see below).

Положение каждой двойной связи обозначают порядковым числом, которое добавляется к букве ω, омега (или латинской букве n). Например, если ближайшая двойная связь в цепи линолевой кислоты начинается от шестого атома углерода, то эту двойную связь обозначают как ω‑6, омега‑6, или n‑6. Поскольку это является характерным признаком для линолевой кислоты, то этот признак является основой её названия: омега‑6 (ω‑6 или n‑6) жирная кислота. Аналогично, характерным признаком альфа-линоленовой кислоты является наличие двойной связи, начинающейся от 3-го атома углерода, если отсчитывать положение атомов углерода от метильной группы (условие - омега, ω). Так что альфа-линоленовую кислоту называют также омега‑3 (ω‑3 или n‑3) жирной кислотой. Эти названия не являются полными.
