agree Vedis Bjørndal : you could add (subjects) to it

agree jeffrey engberg : Agree. But I translate Utdir's curricula, and Utdir does not want to use the word subject/studies after each subject, so keep that out.

disagree Donna Stevens : methodology betyr metodikk, ikke metoder

research methods

If your expression concerns classes / courses teaching methodology related to academic research of some kind, I would suggest "research methods". As mentioned above, you could add classes / courses to this.

See below for an example from UiO.

If it is regarding the actual subject matter and study of "metode" as such, then I agree with the above that the translation would be methodology.
Example sentence:

The study plan included a two-week course in research methods.

Note from asker:
Very useful information; thank you.

(the) methods courses

The first example sentence is a relevant Norwegian reference, from the first reference link below. The second reference link below is likewise from a social science context at a university in the U.S. and lists similar "methods courses" by name.

"Methodology" and "research methods" are what are taught in this category of courses, but they're not the category itself IMO.
Example sentence:

"Utvikle tverrfaglige forskningsmiljøer i skjæringsfeltet mellom metodefagene matematikk, statistikk og informatikk, og andre fagområder innen naturvitenskap, teknologi og medisin."

Note from asker:
We don't usually use this term in English, but it's helpful.
Peer comment(s):

agree Donna Stevens : This is the right meaning! not methodology (which is closely connected and often included in the same course-i.e. Methods and Methodology in Education
