"it is critical that the use of building simulation tools forms a major part of the architectural design process, if a quantifiable “green” outcome is paramount to the success of a project. **Dr. Andrew Marsh of Square One Research (developer of Ecotect) has coined the phrase performative design** to describe this process, whereby analysis, evaluation and refinement of the proposed building’s performance is an integral part of the design process."

A design which can perform to a function or a specification by its design.

A design which can perform to a function or a specification by the way it is designed.

A solar car would be a good example of a performative design.

It works off solar,as the name suggests and it functions as a car, and if it was entered in "The Great Solar car challenge" it would meet the specification requirements of the challenge.

I design tools for a living and they all have to meet this criteria.
