French term

réseaux de neurones

French to English Tech/Engineering Nuclear Eng/Sci
This appears in a technical document dealing with non-invasive monitoring of a process :

"…..une surveillance des pompes (…) par réseaux de neurones"

I assume this has something to do with artificial vision, and not - as one might be tempted to conclude - with a group of boffins putting their brains together.

A web search throws up "neuron networks" : is this the correct translation here, or am I barking madly up the wrong tree ?

Grateful thanks await anyone wise enough to help.

Discussion

Nikki Scott-Despaigne Mar 14, 2009:
Neural -v- neuronal Yes for the two possibilities. I would never run the risk of standing up in court with Wikipedia as a reference either! Thanklyfully there are perfectly reliable orginal language sources for both terms.
Michael GREEN (asker) Mar 14, 2009:
Neuronal network or neural network ? This is a difficult choice - hence my use of the "discuss" feature here.
Further research - prompted by the two equally convincing answers to my question - leads me to think that the jury is still out on this one. Both terms appear to be popular, and setting aside hijacking by pop groups or whatever, both are used in similar contexts - artificial intelligence.
Personally I am wary of Wikipedia, which is often controversial, and in fields I know far better than this one, its contributions are fraught with errors or downright misrepresentation. In this particular case there is a FR Wikipedia page (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuronal_network) which links it back to an as yet undeveloped EN Wikipedia page on "Neuronal networks".
The JO has apparently plumped for "neuronal networks" (http://www.presse-francophone.org/apfa/defi/r/reseaune.htm), and so, on reflection, will I, though not with the degree of conviction that my choice deserves or implies.

neuronal netwrok

One of my "hobby" areas, although most of the neuroscience stuff I read is French.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, Nikki, for your suggestion, and to the other contributors. The choice was difficult, and I have the feeling that the 2 terms suggested are equivalent anyway."

to me, it sounds as though artificial intelligence is being used to monitor the pumps referred to
