This study examines how the mean-reversion aspect of cash holdings and the
industry in which the firm operates help determine the amount of cash holdings the firm
holds. A model of mean-reversion and target cash holdings for both firms and industries
is developed, and the significance of the determinants of cash holdings used in prior
literature is examined after adjusting cash holdings for industry and temporal effects.
The results confirm that both firm and industry cash holdings are mean reverting, and that
the mean-reversion and industry effects on corporate cash holdings dominate the other
variables as determinants of corporate cash holdings.
