Os dois discutiram aos berros sob o olhar aturdido dos etíopes que trabalhavam no acampamento.
Minha sugestão.
Rattled é nervoso, abalado, mas acho que aturdido fica melhor aqui por exprimir confusão, além disso combina melhor com olhar, recurso que dá leveza à frase, evitando mais uma cláusula (que observavam).

Esta opção também tem uma boa sonoridade na sequencia de ts - aturdido, etíopes, trabalhavam...No inglês, se vc reparar também existe uma cadência interessante: rattled camp staff.

Got into it é entrar na briga verbal/berraria - o screaming match.
