French term

bouton

Non-PRO French to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology)
This is a very simple word but in the context of a control panel/console, I don't think "button" is right. It's also not an "indicator" since it seems to be something you actually press/touch ("touch button"?).

Once again, thanks in advance to all the wonderful translators at proz!

It is what it is - a button. I don't know why you hesitate to use it.

Can you give more information about why 'button' would be incorrect?

Push-button

That's what I would call it in this context.

I slightly prefer "push button" to "button" as it emphasizes its physical nature. OTOH, it's only a slight preference and I would know what was meant if I saw "button" on its own.

agree Tony M : Yes, I see no reason to doubt the obvious, unless Asker knows something we don't...

agree Enza Longo : unless it's used for instructions in which case 'push the push-button' wouldn't sound quite right (at least to my ears)

Good point. As ever, context is everything!
agree B D Finch : Use the push-button, press the push-button, depress the push-button - no need to use "push" twice, so OK in instructions too.

agree David Goward : although I can't see what's wrong with "button" either.

agree Rimas Balsys : Agree - Don't see at all why 'button' would be incorrect. Whether it's a mechanical button or a touchpad button, it's still a 'button'.
