I totally understand the concept, but for the life of me I cannot remember the official name -if there is one- for this particular kind of fund in English. Please help! Brain not at full speed on Sunday evenings, it seems.
British English, please, and thanks very much everyone.

pawnshop (pawn shop)

Explanation:
In England, the pawnshop came in with William the Conqueror, with an Italian name, Lombard. In 1338, Edward III pawned his jewels to the Lombards to raise money for his war with France. King Henry V did much the same in 1415.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Marie Anne, If you re-read the context, I think you'll agree that it can't be a pawn shop. This old man has come to pick up a hamper of food which is given to him by the "motepio". I do not think that this is about buying, selling, or exchanging goods as in a pawn shop. thanks. ;)

Yes Kate, it is a trichy one. Why not just going with 'montepío'.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Sorry but definitely not. I know that the first mention looks like it could be a name, because it's capitalised, but if you read the rest of the context, it's definitely a retirement or pension fund of some kind. It's not a proper name. Thanks though, and have a great day, ;)
