From a recipe for cucumber chips.
Pelez le concombre. Coupez-le en tronçons d’environ 6 cm. Détaillez-les à la mandoline. Plongez les lamelles de concombre dans le sirop froid.
I know what a mandoline is (I have one, albeit a very basic one, no crinkle-cut or waffle-cut options ;-). But it's the order here that irks me. They say to cut the cucumber into slices and then use the mandolin. But how can one use a mandolin on pre-cut slices? Or are they using the mandolin to add some sort of detail to the slices (aforementioned crinkle or waffle)? I imagine that would require a special blade, but one that is nevertheless used when actually slicing the cucumber, not after. Or am I missing something?
Help from all you chefs out there is greatly appreciated!
TIA

Slice the (6cm or 3in) chunks with a mandoline
It seems to me that the recipe calls for cutting the cucumber into chunks and then sliciing the chunks with the mandoline. I'm a chef and that's how I would read it.

Note from asker:
Ah, I see! You first cut the cucumber into 6-cm sections, so they are easier to work with, and then into thin slices using the mandolin. Is that how you see it? |

: yes, just bought a mandoline last week, you need to cut the cucmber into chunks first/Nb. 6 cm is more like 2.3 inches...

Thanks. Yes a mandoline a potentially dangerous machine and one needs to have control or one could end up with finger tip chips. Of course, an inch is 2.54 cm, but I think a recipe would be given in whole numbers.

: Yes, that's how I understand it. Although, having pre-cut the pieces of cucumber, you would then have the choice of slicing them horizontally (making a series of rectangles) or vertically (making rounds).

Thank you. And, depending on the blade, crinkle cut or not.

: yes, but be careful of your fingers while you're pushing the food through this kind of slicer!!! Happened to me once, but not twice:)
