Los cojinetes están formados por un molde o casquillo de metal que les da forma, sobre el cual se deposita por vaciado *pour* una capa de material "babbit" que es una aleación de metales de bajo coeficiente de fricción. El "babbit" es demasiado blando para usarlo solo, por eso se aplica sobre un soporte más duro.
