German term

nichts ausrichten können

German to English Art/Literary Sports / Fitness / Recreation boys' football novel
This is from a football novel for 10 year-old boys. I'm not sure whether these terms have specific football meanings as well as their general ones. I'm struggling to make the sentence sound natural.

"Mark Behrend reißt die Arme hoch. Er hat den Ball mit einem eleganten Heber über den Torwart befördert, der sich dem Leder zwar noch hinterher wirft, aber **nichts mehr ausrichten kann**. Der Ball zappelt im Netz."

Thanks for any suggestions.

Not to be able to do anything about it

I think this sounds pretty natural and would fit well with the following sentence.

Thanks, Rachel; glad to have been able to help.
Peer comment(s):

agree Lancashireman : I think Rachel needs to save mention of 'the net' for her next sentence ('The ball bobbles around in the back of the net.')

German term (edited): kann nichts ausrichten - der Ball zappelt im Netz.

is unable to prevent the ball from going into the net (o. hitting the net)

can't prevent the ball from crossing the line

this also takes the "Der Ball zappelt im Netz" into account.
Peer comment(s):

agree hazmatgerman (X) : wouldn't 'keep' be better here than 'prevent'?
