Explanation:
Some schools and colleges break the curriculum into modules, usually of around 40 hours' duration for a full-credit module and 20 hours for a half-credit. Depending on the nature of the course, these modules can be split up and studied over the course of an academic year, a term or even a week in the case of intensive courses. There are usually core modules which are essential study and elective modules which students can take for extra credit. The system also allows for students to study various sections of a course without having to take the whole course.

Explanation:
If it's for a high school, full credit courses are typically full-year ones. Half credit ones are for just one semester.

As for colleges....I've found that courses range from a value of one credit to 3 credits. (At least where I went to college.) It depends on how many hours per week the class meets.
