Vicky, I understand it to be your first meaning - pictures that area scrolled through, though I'm not absolutely certain
Example sentence:
"a campaign informing citizens about the electoral process. Utilizing a “picture box”—a pedagogical tool con-taining over 50 multi-colored images adapted to the Guinean con-text—trainers reached over 160,000 people"
"The populations are well sensitized, have good hygiene practices and actively participate in the projects.• A kit (picture box) for awareness-raising sessions is available."
Note from asker:
Thanks, Clair - would this tie in with the "image box" idea? i.e. is it describing a box with pictures to scroll through on a roller or are the pictures just loose and intended to be taken out in order to see them? |

AJA educational wooden box
AJA developed printed materials that read more like comics than text books. One such alternative tool is a boite à images, a wooden box with an opening through which a trainee can scroll through a large-format illustrated text, frame by frame

Note from asker:
Thanks, RealBlunt! There certainly seem to be lots of references to "image boxes" in connection with educational aid programmes, and these would seem to correspond with the description of the "boîte à images" on your Oxfam link. I am wondering whether, if this is indeed the right object, "image box" is too literal? |
Thanks, RealBlunt for your help - you pointed me in the right direction! |

TV box/boob tube
It refers to 'the box in the corner" where special, specifically designed programs, eg. videos will be shown, I think.

: 'Boob tube' is an item of clothing! Boob being slang for 'breast'.
