pre-harvest testing

'control' might indicate something else: action taken to cure problems eg by use of pesticide or herbicide is known as control in agriculture.
Peer comment(s):

agree David Moore (X) : Testing, or checking, or inspection, or examination - dozens of possibilities probably, but preferably NOT "control"

Yes, I chose testing because samples were being taken, seeming to suggest some sort of scientific testing.

pre-harvest control

My guess...
Peer comment(s):

agree Ingrid Moore : Since 2004 we have had significant control success with the use of clay powder for pre-harvest control and with dipping in cold water electrolyte-solutions for post-harvest treatments; http://www.orgprints.org/6288/;

Danke, Ingrid!
disagree David Moore (X) : Sorry, but this is definitely not what this ENS understands by "control" - these will have been applied lots earlier - like pest controls, etc. It's a typical "false friend", this word "Kontrolle"
