French term

Puissance de coude

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Navigation aids
Context
In a specification for a Glide path / Localizer system:
"Les types de réseaux d’antennes bi-fréquences proposés devront avoir des caractéristiques telles que en terme de puissance de coude, celle-ci sera inférieure à 10 µA au delà de 15° pour un secteur total de 6°. Note : la puissance de coude, exprimée en µA, pour un azimut donné, est l’amplitude de la perturbation de l’alignement qui résulterait de la réflexion totale, dans l’axe d’approche, de l’énergie rayonnée dans l’azimut considéré"

NB = Note : la puissance.....
Ihatetrados (asker) Jul 3, 2008:
Thank you for asking. To my knowledge the text has not been OCRed, it is native French, and otherwise extremely well written and technically relevant. And 'perturbation' sounds OK to me. And yes, G is not the Bible.
Jennifer Levey Jul 3, 2008:
Your text is very strange: 'puissance' is not measured in µA, 'perturbation' seems inappropriate and 'puissance de coude' gets 0 Ghits. Has the doc been OCRed? Is it native French?

puissance=power

That's 99% sure.

can it be bent power?

Coude/Coudé level

If the system uses techniques more-commonly applied to antronomical spectrography, then "puissance de Coudé" translates as "Coude/é level", where Coudé is a proper noun and therefore invariable.

Note from asker:
Thank you, but I guess the writer would have spelt Coudé correctly (the rest of the doc is flawless). I've asked my client for a suggestion and will eventually grade when/if I get one

alignment perturbation level

According to the NB definition.

I translated the embedded definition omitting its amplification. One must trust the writer, presumably an expert, to know his stuff!
Why guess or extrapolate when it's served up on a plate? English-speaking pilots probably have an equivalent flying-jargon term - but a scientific definition is internationally comprehensible and more suitable/correct in a specification context.
Note from asker:
Thanks. I guess it's the general idea, but I've asked my client for a suggestion and will eventually grade when/if I get one.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Jennifer Levey : Please clarify: what is NB? And can you quote the definition - or give us a web-link? // And in any case, asker is querying 'puissance de coude' (the term), not 'l’amplitude de la perturbation de l’alignement' (which is part of the explantion).

I am trying to circumvent the jargon - who needs it?
