plagioclase

Explanation:
or plagioclase feldspar
Feldspar is the most abundant mineral in rocks that are located at or near the earth's surface. Feldspar can have glassy white, blue, green, or red crystals. All feldspars contain silica and aluminum.
When feldspars are exposed to the atmosphere they break down or weather easily. When they are broken down, feldspar forms other minerals, many of which are clay minerals. Feldspars also contain potassium which is a major nutrient for plant growth.
The clays formed by weathered feldspar are used by pottery manufacturing plants. Kaolinite is the highest quality of the feldspar clays used by potters.
Feldspar is number 6 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Plagioclase is a form of feldspar that has a chemical make up of NaAlSi3O8. Plagioclase is usually white but can also be grey and greenish white. This mineral was abundant in the Moon rock samples.

Feldspar is the name of a group of rock-forming minerals which make up as much as 60% of the Earth's crust.[1]

Feldspars crystallize from magma in both intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks, and they can also occur as compact minerals, as veins, and are also present in many types of metamorphic rock.[2] Rock formed entirely of plagioclase feldspar (see below) is known as anorthosite.[3] Feldspars are also found in many types of sedimentary rock.[4]

Ask GeoMan...
Why is feldspar important?

The feldspars are a family of silicate minerals which occur in igneous rocks. There are many different members to the feldspar group. Obviously, silica and oxygen form the foundation for the group, but calcium, sodium, and potassium are also present. One of these elements is usually dominant, but most of the feldspars contain all 3 in varying amounts. It is the proportions of these 3 elements which help determine which specific feldspar is formed. The feldspars are divided into 2 broad categories: plagioclase, which contains calcium and sodium; and orthoclase, which contains potassium. The plagioclase feldspars represent the "continuous branch" of Bowen's Reaction Series, and form a complete series between anorthite (the pure calcium member), and albite (the sodium-rich variety).

I once saw an estimate that said that 60% of the earth's crust is composed of feldspar. This is quite a number, and since feldspar is nearly always present in igneous rocks, most classification schemes depend on the amount and kind of feldspar. In general terms, mafic and intermediate rocks contain plagioclase, with the more calcium present, the more mafic the resulting rock. Orthoclase occurs only in the felsic igneous rocks.

Plagioclase feldspars containing significant amounts of exsolved K-rich feldspar are called antiperthites. It is only in once-molten rocks quenched at very high temperatures that the full range of so-called high plagioclases exist as simple solid solutions.
