Spanish term

caja gris

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping
The context highly suggests that this is a "black box" and yet it's called a grey box. What could it be? The document is about safety in train components.

La actuación de los finales de carrera y manipulación del by-pass de tracción, quedará memorizada en el sistema caja gris, dada su trascendencia en la explotación, junto a otros datos del tren (fecha, hora, lugar, etc.).
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 black box

Your own idea seems right:)

Or "grey box system" if you prefer - is this about farming equipment?

I would just use "grey box system" in this text because it doesn't appear to be what a black box in general is and seems to be proprietary feature of the machinery described.
Note from asker:
Many thanks for your help! Later parts of the same document said "caja negra" so I believe gris was a silly mistake in this part
