agree  Kate Major Patience: 'rummage' is what came to my mind: in the UK, 'rummaging through the rubbish bins' rather than the 'trash/garbage'. What we fondly call 'skip-diving' in Wales, although that's slightly different! Think I just like the term...:)

Notes to answerer
Asker: i don't know how reliable is Wikipedia... but have a look:Dumpster diving is the practice of sifting through commercial or residential trash to find items that have been discarded by their owners, but which may be useful to the Dumpster diver. The practice of Dumpster diving is also known variously as urban foraging, binning, alley surfing, Curbing, D-mart, Dumpstering, garbaging, garbage picking, garbage gleaning, skip-raiding, skip diving, skipping, skip-weaseling, tatting, skally-wagging or trashing In this particular case, I have to refer to people who go to the landfill or dump where disposals are to be buried. Yes, they are let in to find food. Very sad...

agree  Kate Major Patience: Love it. 'skip-diving' is a popular occupation in Wales, or at least it was when I was studying fine arts and they wouldn't give us materials!! haha. :)
