neutral  writeaway: too little context. Unless Asker can get more info, it's not a great idea to be so definite. display also hints at this but leaves the interpretation open.

  -> in my mind, "scene" was pretty neutral, not as in "creating a scene", more like "scenario". But I can see that the "creating a scene" scenario is what people would probably think of. Agree about lack of context - more would help us all!

agree  writeaway: the 'show they put on' can imply pretense, posturing etc. feel it's a good solution if context confirms it but without context, a bit of a risky slant to put on it /maybe. then show could work.

My first thought was the expression "sortir le grand jeu", which basically means you do everything you can to achieve something.

Bringing it back to the context you give, I thought maybe they are simply referring to a big deal.
