"Supporter, partisan" (enl. Nordstedts ordbok) känns för svagt för att beskriva förhållandet mellan dem: Engels var inte bara någon som försvarade Marx allmänna ideer - han var en i hög grad oberoende tänkare och dessutom Marx bäste vän, om jag förstår det rätt.

Du behöver en friare översättning. Jag tror inte en översättning av vapendragare fungerar lika bra i bildlig överförd metaforisk bemärkelse på engelska. (Tror att metaforen konkret härstammar från D Quixote och Sancho Panza).

Aide är från början en militär term (Aide-de-Camp som importerats från franskan) men fungerar numer inom alla områden.
