(Texten handlar om Balzac och det finns inte mer kontext om förhållandet Marx-Engels.)

Inte vapendragare i bokstavlig betydelse naturligtvis.

"Supporter, partisan" (enl. Nordstedts ordbok) känns för svagt för att beskriva förhållandet mellan dem: Engels var inte bara någon som försvarade Marx allmänna ideer - han var en i hög grad oberoende tänkare och dessutom Marx bäste vän, om jag förstår det rätt.

En friare översättning behövs, tror jag.

Du behöver en friare översättning. Jag tror inte en översättning av vapendragare fungerar lika bra i bildlig överförd metaforisk bemärkelse på engelska. (Tror att metaforen konkret härstammar från D Quixote och Sancho Panza).

Aide är från början en militär term (Aide-de-Camp som importerats från franskan) men fungerar numer inom alla områden.
