Spanish term

acciones previas

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Accounting computer programme related to finance/accounting
It's the title of a section of the manual: "Cierre del periodo -acciones previas". I suppose this is "close of period"- be it end of year or whatever, but really do not want to get the next bit wrong...is this shares from the last period? I'm not sure I understand the concept!

Discussion

Kate Major Patience (asker) Nov 29, 2007:
Ok thanks for your feedback Henry, much appreciated...I haven't got a great deal of context, and am wondering whether the sense of the word isn't as suggested below- 'preparatory action', as the manual then seems to use the English term 'stock' for material 'stock', and 'acciones' does not appear again. The manual explains the steps taken on a computer system in order to close/organize the accounts for a company (materials, salaries etc.) Sorry if I've not been too clear!
Henry Hinds Nov 29, 2007:
What we need is CONTEXT, what are the items covered under "acciones previas"? It would not appear to be stock.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thansk to everyone- think 'first steps' sounds very good but later I have 'steps' as something else so 'preliminary actions' is the one- thanks a lot for the help. most appreciated. "

Previous actions / previous stocks

It all depends on what the manual is about. If it has to do with finances, I'd surely go with "previous stock" (or "past stock") ....

however, if it's not about finances/stockholders, then that would be "previous actions"
Peer comment(s):

agree Victoria Porter-Burns : I agree - it's context-dependant

preparatory actions

IMO
Peer comment(s):

agree Antonio Castillo González : creo que se refiere a las acciones contables previas al cierre del ejercicio, como la comprobación de los ingresos, de los gastos, del beneficio o pérdida, u otras rutinas semejantes.

first steps

Kate added that this is a computer manual talking about an accounting system before closing a period. So they're talking about the "first steps" that need to be done before doing the period close.

I've installed several computer accounting systems for Spanish- and English-speaking clients. Closing a period or doing a period close is a pretty big deal, because it's not always easy to fix any mistakes that might occur, and there's usually an audit log listing everything that was done on the computer.

So before you do a period close, there's normally a few things you have to do in order to make sure everything is ready. The simplest term for this in a user manual would be "first steps," which also gets a decent number of hits on google when you search for it like this:

google [accounting "period close" "first steps"]
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=accounting "period clos...

If you wanted something fancier, you could alternatively say "preliminary steps."
