Dutch term

al dan niet optioneel en indien benodigd

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Systems, Networks
"Het [software] systeem wordt (al dan niet optioneel en indien benodigd) geïmplementeerd op de Microsoft BackOffice server."

This is part of a tender specification for software that is to be designed, to the extent possible, to run on the existing hardware infrastructure.

Discussion

Buck Mar 14, 2007:
I don't think I would use if possible. Dutch sometimes drives me crazy. Is it optional or not? Why can't they just say that in the Dutch? Anyway, to me it seems likely that the client wants the software, but does not want to commit itself. My take anyway
Ben Hickman (asker) Mar 14, 2007:
What do you think of this? Now I'm wondering if the author perhaps meant that this is een "optional" requirement. I'm thinking of writing something along the lines of "The [software] system will be implemented (if possible and necessary) on the Microsoft BackOffice server." "If possible" might indicate that this particular server may or may not be able to support the software, and "necessary" might indicate that this particular server may or may not be required for the software provider's solution (several different servers are listed). What I'd like to hear is whether or not you think this is a reasonable translation or whether I am way off target and the translation is ridiculous.

optionally or not, and if necessary

There are several optional answers. Just a suggestion.

whether or not optional and in case necessary

ought to suffice
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : in case necessary isn't good English. indien nodig does not translate literally.

client option

The Dutch sentence is very poorly phrased and a one-on-one translation won't necessarily do your final text any favours. Assuming this item is an optional extra to be taken at the client's discretion, I would suggest as a translation:

"The system can be implemented on the Microsoft Back Office server (client option)."
Peer comment(s):

agree Tina Vonhof (X) : short and to the point.

agree Deborah do Carmo : am also changing level of question back up, easy enough to understand but as can be seen from the rather literal attempts not that simple to phrase, also doesn't fall under site definition of non pro
