German term or phrase: Taktprinzip
This is just a heading - part of a page on the application of JIT (Just in Time) theory to a motor manufacturing factory. There is a series of specific principles governing JIT and am looking for the precise one here. This implies some knowledge perhaps of this Fachbereich...

takt principle
Explanation:
I'm agreeing to some extent with Audry - but low CL as I don't have any personal experience of this field. However, on this website (which is in German and English) the translator has decided to translate "Takt" as "takt":-

Flow- principle
The Flow Principle encourages W.E.T. to reduce lead times through reducing batch sizes and eliminating buffers between processes. This involves organizing and synchronizing processes for one-piece flow. Flowing assembly lines are the most advanced form of one-piece flow. All departments have to be planned on the same parameters to allow a Flow- production and a constant, minimal throughput time. Means working “hand in hand”.

Takt- principle
The Takt Principle encourages W.E.T. to produce in a pulse perfectly synchronized to the customer demand, and balanced to ensure a smooth process. This involves levelling the customer demand, and reducing throughput times to match demand and reduce bottlenecks. The takt time is the heartbeat of a just-in-time production. An optimum is reached when the cycle time corresponds to the customer Takt time.

Pull- principle
The Pull Principle encourages W.E.T. to produce something only when the downstream process requests it, reducing lead times and eliminating buffers. This involves creating information flow directly between these processes, and not through a centralized "push" mechanism. The pull system differs from push system in that the production planning is done directly at shop floor. The pull- principle guarantees low stock levels between the production process. The following process pulls the parts, in the required number and the required time.

Zero PPM- principle
The Zero PPM Principle encourages W.E.T. to produce only excellent outputs, reducing lead time and eliminating waste. This involves following a rigorous Zero Defect program of fault prevention and correction, and having stable and robust processes.

agree  Kim Metzger: "Takt” is the German word for the baton that an orchestra conductor uses to regulate the speed, beat, or timing at which musicians play. http://www.sap.com/solutions/manufacturing/pdf/WP_Adaptive_M...

(Just) like clockwork

Explanation:
A better phrase for a heading...

JIT is all about running an extremely tight ship and making sure that things go like clockwork.

"Like clockwork" is a slightly more general phrase than the term "takt time" which refers to the rate or time at which a product is completed.

I found this definition of "takt time" on the Web:

"Lean production uses takt time as the rate or time at which a product is completed."

That's fine. Personally, I think "Just like clockwork" is a more catchy phrase for a heading and, although I haven't read the rest of the text, I think there's a good chance that you could get away with it, Simon. Perhaps it's a more effective image to help readers get their heads around "takt time" and the rest of the contents of this chapter on JIT.

Example sentence(s):
  • Your distribution centre gets faster, your finishing operation wastes less time, or your JIT assembly line operates like clockwork.
  • Each logistical function must operate like clockwork for JIT to be effective.
