English term

nose pointed upward

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
“We should thank Beast for saving us. Without him, we might’ve had a bad time of it.”
Instantly, the girls rushed over to Beast who was a little way off, with his nose pointed upward, sniffing the air.

Dear native English speakers!
Please advise on the phrase. Is it OK to put it this way when talking about a dog? Does it sound natural enough? I hope it does, but I'm not 100% sure since I'm no NES myself.
Thank you!

I think it sounds fine ...

But I would change the comma placement as follows:

Instantly, the girls rushed over to Beast, who was a little way off with his nose pointed upward, sniffing the air.

Alternatively, you might write "... with his nose in the air, sniffing."
Peer comment(s):

agree Richard Benham : Definitely a comma after "Beast" (REQUIRED because what follows is a non-defining clause) and "upward", but I would probably leave the comma after "off".

Thanks, Richard. A comma certainly isn't incorrect after "off", but I suggested removing it as there is no danger of any confusion without it, and as a fourth comma in this brief sentence seems to me to border on clutter.
