German term
Ob bei Mutter Beimer in der Küche oder bei Schimanski an der Pommesbude

My text is about food on TV and what a bad influence it has on us:
Im Fernsehen wird ständig gegessen. Ob bei Mutter Beimer in der Küche oder bei Schimanski an der Pommesbude, in jeder Sendestunde tauchen viele Filmszenen, Werbespots oder Abschnitte aus Nachrichten, Talkshows oder Magazinen auf, die sich um Ernährung drehen.
What I need are good equivalents for "Mutter Beimer in der Küche" and "Schimanski an der Pommesbude". I watch like no television in Germany, much less know what is currently on in the States or England. Can anybody out there who is more up-to-date on their television programs help out? Thanks!

“They fear that such well-loved characters as Homer, the cast from Friends, and even the doctors in ER, are poor role models because of their dietary habits, and are calling on TV producers to take a more responsible approach."

Kath's Caff or Fitz at his favourite haunt
if my memory serves me correctly, "mutter beimer" is in "Lindenstraße" - a UK soap equivalent would be Eastenders and Jane (Ian's partner) running Kath's Caff...
As for Schimanski, I presume this is the detective.... Maybe 'Fitz' in "Cracker" would be the closest... although he has other vices such as smoking, drinking, gambling, etc....

: Yes, let's hear it for the Limey/Pom soaps. Any Aussies out there who would like a go?

: Agree from the Brit angle. Rebecca did not specify dialect/target audience. Soaps are a pain but they keep us in touch (to some extent).

yep... they 'educate' the 'masses'....

: I wouldn't know what Kath's Caff is w/out further context (but OK, I've "been away" for a while). And Fitz's favourite haunt would surely be a casino and/or pub, but not e.g. McDoof

agreed, but his eating habits were not exactly 'jamie oliver's' either...
