tone

Arabic to English Social Sciences Religion \
"MA'AT |mät|: The pharaonic goddess of truth,daughter of RA. Also a pharaonic noun meaning, Order, Equilibrium, Harmony, Tone, Individual and Cosmic Consciousness. "

The author is Egyptian. I suspect that "Tone" is not the accepted translation, and thought an Arabic translator might be able to guess the original and suggest an English or French translation.

I'm looking for an English or French answer. (I'm actually translating the English into French)

The list of words in Sakhr's dictionary are English>Arabic translations of the many different meanings of "tone" as listed in English dictionaries. You can look them up in Webster's or OED under "tone."

That may be a bit of a tall order! I checked a few Arabic websites that mention the goddess "Maat", and they confirm that Maat stands for: Truth, justice, harmony, balance, truthfulness and integrity. As an Arabic speaker, I have no idea what "tone" could

Fuad, the author is a native speaker of Arabic. She writes in English as a second language. There are numerous mistakes in her "English", most of which I can understand. I would image that she did indeed translate her Arabic into English, but even if she wrote the original in bad English, the problem is the same. She started with an Arabic idea and rendered it as "Tone" in English. An Arabic speaker may be able to guess what Arabic word she mistranslated as "Tone". Perhaps you cannot help me, but another Arabic speaker may be able to.

You thought it was Arabic because the author was Egyptian. The author, however, is merely stating standard Egyptology material, mostly developed by Western Egyptologists.

An Arabic>English translator is by no means in a better position to guess what word was mistranslated to "tone" because "tone" was not translated (or mistranslated) from Arabic.

I placed this in Arabic> English for an obvious reason. An Arabic>English translator might be able to guess what Arabic word was mistranslated as "Tone". An English>English translator could not.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for a translation for "Ma'at," post a note so we can edit your headword to "Ma'at" and change the source language to Ancient Egyptian (again, it is not Arabic).

Since "tone" is and English word (not Arabic), I have changed the source language from Arabic to English. I am not sure which target language you intended. If it is not English, post a note clarifying your need.

Simply omit "tone"

I have searched several sites (like Nesrin) to try to establish what kind of harmony (tone) that the deceased goddess has established. In fact, the writer of the English (I can't say translator!) has tried to mention another synonym for the Arabic word تناغم. With the help of the Arabic > English alone, harmony was found, and next to it there was the word "tone". Both were pasted! That's how it goes with most people assuming the translator job, believe me!!

So when looking to the description of the goddess, you find nothing related to music. tone = تناغم ; harmony = تناغم
both were written to denote the same meaning.
So I have come to the conclusion that you may omit the word "tone" safely, as the word harmony gives the meaning in a better way.

If you open Al MAwrid Ar>Eng, you will get my point.

agree Nesrin : That's exactly what I think - the writer couldn't shake off the Arabic habit of putting one synonym after the other, even when there was no need for it.
