The author is a native Spanish speaker, but also speaks Portuguese and is writing about Brazil, so the terms could be Portuguese (though I can't seem to find it in any dictionary). I have a hunch it has something to do with burning something, but I don't know what that would have to do with rivers, and I certainly wouldn't know how to translate it. Thanks for your help!
