Discussion

Patricia Rosas Oct 30, 2005:
What is your question? Persianas are "blinds" (in the United States)--a type of window covering, hence "shutters" (although shutters are often on the outside of the window rather than in the interior, which doesn't seem likely in this case).

vertical blinds

Persianas are the vertical window blinds, but since your text already has "shutters" in parenthesis, I would use that.

disagree Refugio : Why vertical? // Horizontal blinds are certainly called persianas as well. But these are not blinds, they are shutters, and vertical blinds would be particularly impractical on a train.

Hi Ruth. There are also the horizontal ones, and those aren't called "persianas" AFAIK.//They would definitely be inconvenient (whether vertical or horizontal) :))) I'd use shutters, as I wrote above.
agree Maria Itati Encinas : just blinds

slide shutters

London, 11 August 2005: Metronet Rail has designed a new innovative tool to aid the maintenance cleaning of connecting studs that transfer power from one train carriage to another. The new tool will not only improve safety but help to reduce staff injuries, creating more efficient ways of working. The connecting studs are hidden behind two shutter windows as part of a metal box below the train buffer known as a ‘Dutch oven'.

Metronet Rail's in-house development workshop facility developed the new tool that's considerably lighter and opens the slide shutters individually, rather than together. This allows cleaning works to be done in half the time. In the past maintenance staff had to use a long steel bar, dating back to the 1960's, weighing around 5.8kg to open and close the doors that hide the stud connectors.

The new lightweight aluminium model is designed with more leverage and has advanced insulation to reduce the risk of the tool acting as a conductor.

Depot Production Team leader, Larry Kerby said today: “The battle we had was that the oven shutters were designed to remain shut and staff had to push against a spring to open them. The tool will definitely make life a lot easier for depot staff and help to change the way we work.”

Peter Keene, Safety and Environmental Advisor, added: “This will make a huge difference to how we operate in the depots.”
