Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Oct 12, 2005:
Thank you all! I don't know why I cannot grate questions here now.
However,my OXFORD ADVANCED LEARNER'S DICTIONARY OF CURRENT ENGLISH says tolerance is "",i.e., uncountable. :-)
Richard Benham Oct 11, 2005:
It is simply not true that "tolerance" has no plural, and you shouldn't use a bilingual dictionary as a grammar reference anyway. Besides, in my Pons the "no plural" is clearly placed so as to apply *only* to the senses of "open-mindedness" and similar.

German term (edited): unterliegt ueblichen Toleranzen

within standard limits

or (being) within standard limits.
That would be my suggestion
Peer comment(s):

neutral Stephen Sadie : unterliegt = subject to ...innerhalb = within

German term (edited): unterliegt ueblichen Toleranzen

subject to standard tolerance limits

tolerance limits is what I frequently use for "Toleranzen". It may help solve the problem with "tolerance(s)" ;o))
Peer comment(s):

neutral Stephen Sadie : ok so at least you recognise that tolerances is "no go"

neutral Richard Benham : Problem: "limits" puts it the wrong way around. Under a table, this phrase is probably a disclaimer--you can't take these figures too literally.

German term (edited): unterliegt ueblichen Toleranzen

is subject to the usual tolerances

Despite certain strident and ill-informed remarks, "tolerance" singular is unidiomatic and therefore just plain wrong in this context.

Sorry, if it's under a table, you should omit the "is".

agree Armorel Young : yes, I think I have a minor preference for "the usual" rather than "normal" - I wouldn't want to use "common" at all
