"Exhibit" is not synonymous with "evidence." For example, "attachments" to petitions, motions, decalrations, affidavits, and other court papers are all referred to as "exhibits." So "exhibit" is just that: a material thing that is "shown" or "presented." It often is a piece of evidence, but it does not have to be. For example, an exhibit could very well be a picture that a trial attorney may show to a witness in order to ask him if he knows the person in the picture. The picture itself does not prove anything or even purport to prove anything, but without it, the attorney would not be able to direct the question.
